Curiosities about the currency
The boliviano (BOB) is the official currency of Bolivia and was put into circulation in November 1987. Previously, it was in circulation between 1864 and 1963, when it was replaced by the bolivian peso. Its symbol is Bs and it is issued by the Central Bank of Bolivia.
The current banknotes of Bolivia are 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 BOB. All are made of paper. Some designs from the original series of 1986 are still in circulation. Additionally, there used to be banknotes of 0.01, 0.05, 1, 2, and 5 bolivianos.
The currencies of Bolivia in circulation are 10, 20, and 50 cents, as well as 1, 2, and 5 bolivianos. One boliviano is equivalent to 100 cents. On the obverse, all have the inscription "unity is strength" as a national emblem.
The new series of boliviano banknotes, issued between 2018 and 2019, has received several awards for being the most secure banknotes in Latin America. They contain many elements that make their counterfeiting almost impossible and that help combat money laundering.
The design of the 2 bolivianos currency changed drastically, as it was confused by size with the 1 BOB. Currently, the former is shaped like an eleven-sided polygon, while the latter is round and has smooth edges.
