What you need to know about the currency Jordanian Dinar
The Jordanian dinar (JOD) is the currency in circulation in Jordan and also in the West Bank. Its symbol is JD. It replaced the Palestinian pound in 1949 and, since then, the Central Bank of Jordan has been exclusively responsible for its issuance. It is the fourth most valuable currency in the world.
The current banknotes of the Jordanian dinar are 50, 20, 10, 5, and 1 JOD. Currently, the fourth and fifth series coexist. They are all made of paper and have security features. They depict ancient emirs, rulers, and kings of the territory, all of whom are men.
The currencies of Jordan are 1, 5, and 10 qirsh or piastres, and a quarter or a half dinar. The dinar is divided into 10 dirhams, into 100 qirsh or piastres. On all the obverses, the name of Abdullah II, King of Jordan, appears.
In the West Bank, the Jordanian dinar coexists with the Israeli shekel, the US dollar, and the euro. As this is an occupied territory, the value of the currency fluctuates very frequently.
The Palestinian pound was the currency used in Jordan and the West Bank until 1949. This currency continued to be used in the Gaza Strip until 1951, the year it was replaced by the Egyptian pound.
