What you need to know about the currency New Zealand Dollar
The New Zealand dollar is the official currency of New Zealand and has been in circulation in this country since 1967. Additionally, it is also the currency in use in the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, and the Pitcairn Islands. Its symbol is NZ$. Before its arrival, the New Zealand pound was used.
Currently, there are banknotes of 100, 50, 20, 10, and 5 New Zealand dollars in circulation. The current series, issued in 2015 and 2016, is one of the safest in the world: the banknotes are made of polymer and incorporate up to fifteen anti-fraud elements on the front and back.
The circulating New Zealand dollar coins are 1 and 2 NZ$, as well as 10, 20, and 50 cents. One dollar is divided into one hundred cents. All the reverses contain a distinctive element of the country: animals, geographical features, or Māori symbols.
This currency is colloquially known as "kiwi" due to the bird of the same name. It is a national icon and appears on one side of the New Zealand dollar coin. The birds also form part of the security features of the banknotes.
The edges of the 20 ¢ coin are of "Spanish flower". These edges are used in only seven coins worldwide. It consists of a smooth edge with seven notches that simulate the shape of a flower. It is called this because the peseta was the first currency to use it.
