What you need to know about the currency Sri Lanka Rupee
The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan rupee, also known as the Sri Lankan rupee, which replaced the British pound. Its ISO code is LKR and its abbreviation is Rs. One rupee is divided into 100 cents and the issuing authority is the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Currently, Sri Lankan banknotes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000, and 2000 rupees are in circulation. The latter were added in 2006 due to the low value of the currency in the markets. All Sri Lankan banknotes are printed vertically on one side.
The latest currencies of Sri Lanka put into circulation are from the year 2005, with denominations of 25 and 50 cents and 1, 2, and 5 rupees. Four years later, in 2009, the 10 rupee currency was introduced. On the obverse of all of them, the coat of arms of the country is represented.
The banknotes of Sri Lanka feature very bright colours. The 10 and 1000 rupee banknotes are green, while the 20 rupee banknotes are purple. The 50 rupee banknote is blue and the 100 rupee banknote is orange. The 500 rupee banknote is salmon and pink.
Foreign currencies circulated on the island due to the occupations and colonisations by Europeans. Sri Lanka is known for its famous export plantations of cinnamon, rubber, and Ceylon tea.
